Operational Efficiency and

Catalyst Research

The importance of digital twins in the industry has become increasingly important. This technology aims to monitor business processes in real time, and help engineers and operators make decisions.

SOCAR R&D Process Development Unit is focused on improving operational process efficiencies at Petkim and the STAR Refinery with the digital twin models it has developed. Using digital simulations, product efficiency, quality, and process safety are improved in factories, and operating costs are reduced. In addition, we have pioneering applications such as polymer reactor models, refinery unit modeling studies, and corrosion monitoring.

We emphasize recycling projects that aim to reduce the carbon footprint for a sustainable world. We work with universities and industry to convert industrial waste into value-added fuels and chemicals. One of our projects is "Development of a Catalyst for the Synthesis of Dimethyl Ether (DME) from Carbon Dioxide", which we carry out together with İzmir Institute of Technology (İYTE).

We develop new catalyst recipes and test their performance to convert the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from Petkim plants into dimethyl ether (DME), a valuable chemical and alternative fuel. With the project results, we aim to inspire many sectors, particularly high energy users, with a focus on sustainable technologies.
